Kitting
Fulfillment lingo for the assembly of individual items into ready-to-ship packages or kits.
When you should kit products?
Kitting should be used when you are frequently fulfilling orders with multiple items that are identical.
A variety of items can be kitted, and here are a few everyday ones:
Media kits, product samples, promotional items/literature, instructional packets, new product launches, and game sets
The Benefits of Kitting
When kitting is done in bulk, in lieu of individual orders as they come in, it becomes more of a linear process, meaning the items will be kitted at a quicker rate. If you process your own order fulfillment, this will save you time. If you outsource fulfillment, this will save you money because your pick/pack costs will be less, as each kit will be counted as one SKU, as opposed to paying for pick/pack of each individual item.
When items are shipped in kit form, it will lessen the chance for error with order fulfillment. It will permit you or your fulfillment house to pre-print shipping labels, eliminating the need for weighing and labeling of individual items.
Kitting can also lead to postal savings with more efficient and cost-effective packaging. As an example, rather than packing individual items into a standard-sized box, developing a custom box for popular kits can reduce the size and/or weight of your packages.
Receiving
Whether you outsource your order fulfillment to a company, such as PB&J Fulfillment, or you choose to DIY it, receiving inventory from your suppliers is the first step toward getting orders to your end customers.
Here is what to expect from fulfillment providers, such as PB&J, once inventory is received at their warehouse:
Count each item to confirm the actual number of items matches the number of items ordered from the supplier(s)
Inspect the inventory to see if any items have been damaged
Add SKUs to warehouse management software: to keep track of the location, inventories, and number of sales for each one your items
Place SKU or bar code labels to required items, unless items have been pre-coded by supplier.
In certain circumstances, kitting may be done for items during the receiving process.
Storage
Once inventory has been received, counted, inspected, labeled, and added to warehouse management software, it is time for it to be shelved. Proper inventory storage is a crucial aspect to maximize speed and accuracy of any order fulfillment operations.
Individual SKU’s will often be designated to an individual storage bin. Allowing for a quicker, more efficient order processing. Generally, a set amount of inventory will be placed in bins, with any overflow storage be placed on shelving within the warehouse space (this utilizes a fulfillment providers warehouse to the fullest).
“Hot SKUs,” - those that sell the most often, may be placed in closer proximity to the order packing stations, in certain instances bins would be relocated.
